Corum Watches

by: Michael O'Brien

With a relatively short history compared to other well known Swiss watch making companies, Corum has been well established on the list of fine watches that continue to come out of Switzerland. Started in nineteen fifty five, the cofounder, Gaston Reis got his start in watch making at a time when the watch-wearing public was making a switch from traditional pocket watches to wrist watches. Along with his daughter Simone and other cofounder Rene Bannwart, Corum had become known for modern and innovative design styles combined with traditional Swiss precision and accuracy.

Still operating in the Swiss watch capital of Chaux-de-Fonds, the Corum line features a wide variety of watches with an equally wide range of pricing. Corum wrist watches sport unique styles from the traditional to the artfully designed. Singular styling can be seen in models such as the Trapeze with its distinctive quadrilateral bezel shape. With fun names Bubble, Sugar Cube and Toboggan these watches combine precision and classic styling with identities all their own. Corum received high praise for the creation of the Liberty Eagle which uses a twenty dollar gold coin as the basis for a truly unique and carefully crafted watch design. It would appear that Corum works hard to avoid the pitfalls of recycling old designs striving to stay on the cutting edge of technology.

The Bannwart family is still intimately involved in the company keeping alive the artist vision of the founders and maintaining the high standards that have always been associated with the tradition of Swiss watch making.
